Arizona - Battle Zone Between Immigrants And Arizonians

Joe Arpaio is the Arizona sheriff of Maricopa County. He is currently raging a war against all immigrants. He is hard-talking and very controversial Arizona sheriff, but to me, he is a just an ignorant right winger. As soon as a new law allowing police officers to demand for proof of legal residency went into effect, the sheriff went on raids to arrest a total amount of 89 people. 73 people were undocumented, but at the same time 16 of them were our own, innocent American citizens. This man went around the state of Arizona targeting Latinos for petite crimes just to ask for their identification and proof of legal residency, and in fact, there is one case in which he arrested a Latino man for a cracked windshield. I do not know about you, but this just seems like he is abusing this new law. I do not support the illegal immigrants, especially if they are apart of the drug cartels, but this law is simply ludicrous. You cannot expect people to be carrying around their passports and birth certificates, while they might be doing mundane tasks such as shopping. Arizona lawmakers defend this bill saying that the federal government has failed to keep out more than 450,000 illegal immigrants, and therefore it is their job to clean the streets. I say that this law will only allow for people like Sheriff Joe to excuse their racial profiling. Allowing people like him to do this will only lead to more laws with unconstitutional back bones.

The Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer recently signed a controversial bill that instates changes to a new state migration law that she says should ease concerns about racial profiling. She is quoted saying, "These changes specifically answer legal questions raised by some who expressed fears that the original law would somehow allow or lead to racial profiling," and after the signing she said, "These new amendments make it crystal clear and undeniable that racial profiling is illegal and will not be tolerated in Arizona."

Political opponent Dan Pochoda said that law enforcement officers -- under strong pressure to find and remove illegal immigrants -- could still identify people by race and then look for a minor infraction as an excuse to investigate them. Obviously, I agree with this statement because it hold a lot of truth. No matter how clear this law is, it cannot stop racial profiling.

The new amendment requires for immigrant to carry alien registration documents at all times. If a normal American does not have to neither should they. On the other hand the new law forces police to have detained the suspected illegal on other charges before being able to ask for proof of legal residence. Although a big change, my only comment is that it is not big enough.

While being here illegal is not fine, I do not find this law effective enough to stop illegals. My belief is that the conflicts in Mexico are too big for us to ignore. The economic problems, drug problems, and political corruption going on in the southern borders of our neighbors has caused the people of Mexico to flee to our country. I believe that we have ignored those problems too long, and the only way we can decrease the number of illegals is through a well thought out plan to help our southern allies reach a stable state, economically, politically, and even in the state of the hopes of the Native Mexicans.
